Completing a 1,600 metres swim in the pristine waters of Dubai coast in 30 degrees is no mean task. But hundreds of swimmers geared in their swimming costumes and red swim caps ran towards the Arabian Gulf as the whistle blew at the Burj Al Arab Swim at 8 am.
The day was sunny and the water cold as 450 swimmers, across age groups, took to the waves to embark on the 1,600 metres race. Burj Al Arab today joined the Global Swim Series, the world's largest series of open water swim races globally bringing together swimmers from 29 countries. Two races, 1,600 metres and 800 metres were hosted with crowds gathering to cheers those participating.
The swimming event, now in its thirteenth edition, is organised by the Dubai Sports Council and Dubai Holding, which owns the Burj Al Arab. Those participating are entitled to a day pass to the Wild Wadi water park and a half-price ticket for a friend, apart from giveaways.
To mark the Year of Giving, the proceeds from the race will go to the Dubai-based charity - the obesity research fund of Al Jalilah Foundation. A sum total of Dh158,750 (approx. Dh160,000) was collected through registration fee plus a contribution from the sponsors, supporting the event.
In less than 30 minutes, the hundreds of participants swam back towards the finish line and were welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd.
