Faisal Al Ketbi, the UAE's most accomplished Jiu-Jitsu fighter, has pinned down opponents on the mats across the globe. And now, the four-time world champion is up for a whole new challenge. The 32-year-old has been volunteering at the drive-through Covid-19 testing facility at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi since its launch. For him, Covid-19 pandemic is a rival that has to be beaten at all costs.
"Volunteering, right now, is like a tournament I compete in. I am supporting the first line of defence against this challenge as best as I can. All my focus is on doing my best to help as much as I can during this crucial time and support my country," Al Ketbi said.
He had previously volunteered during the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. His passion for rendering such services is deep and intense. Helping the community is part of education and lifestyle of Jiu-Jitsu fighters, pointed out the Emirati sportsman, while stressing on core values of "giving back".
"Coaches spend a lot of time teaching us and sharing knowledge and the best way we can repay their time and effort is by giving back to the people. We are Muslims and one of the important values of our religion is to give back to our community. By backing such initiatives, we are just playing a small part in supporting our country and the wise leadership that is leaving no stone unturned to effectively combat this challenge."
Al Ketbi urged more athletes to join the UAE's efforts to tame the virus.
"A lot of my fellow Jiu-Jitsu athletes are already doing it. And it would be great if more athletes join us. We, Jiu-Jitsu athletes, have the ability to help out wherever required. Giving back is something that we hold very close to our hearts and since people know us from our performances on the mat, we can play a role in persuading people to participate in the campaign, follow safety precautions, and offer help when needed."
Al Ketbi, 2018 Asian Games gold medallist in the 94-kg category, is training regularly at home, while focusing on strength and conditioning exercises, and cardiovascular workouts. He is doing a sports show on the UAEJJF's Instagram handle titled 'Stay Safe with UAEJJF'.
"Keeping yourself active is important for an athlete and I am glad I can do that with my home workouts and with volunteering." And he has a word of caution for the people: "Stay safe, stay smart and follow the rules."
