Beggars are coming up with innovative methods to trick residents into giving them money. According to the Sharjah Police, beggars - especially women - have been going around the emirate pretending to be affected by the political situation in some Arab countries.
Residents have reported 185 beggars and illegal street vendors to the police since a dedicated helpline was launched in Sharjah in June. In August, the helpline received 26 complaints, while in July there were 58, including 45 about beggars. In June, the police received complaints about 94 beggars and seven street vendors.
As soon as the police received the complaints, security patrols were dispatched to arrest the beggars and vendors. They are then deported.
Most of the arrested street vendors were Asians and were involved in selling duplicate goods like clothes, home appliances and cosmetics.
The arrested beggars and vendors were staying on in the country illegally in violation of residency laws, the police said.
The police have reiterated their appeal to the public to report beggars around mosques, markets or shopping malls to the dedicated helpline 901.
Some beggars are also involved in criminal activities, the police have warned.
