The Dubai Customs foiled 38 bids to smuggle 48,000 fake products, worth Dh14.5 million, in the first nine months of this year. All the counterfeit items, bearing 45 trademarks, were seized and recycled.
The 38 seizures were part of the 243 intellectual property (IP) disputes handled over a period from January 1 to November 30 this year, said Yousef Ozair Mubarak, director of Intellectual Property Rights Department.
"These 243 IP disputes (litigations about originality of products) stood at Dh39.2 million as per the market value."
Thorough investigations proved that 196 of these products, valued at Dh24.7 million, were genuine, he disclosed.
"All the 48,000 counterfeit items of 45 trademarks seized in the remaining 38 cases were recycled."
Records show that Dubai Customs handled 272 intellectual property disputes in 2018. "These stood at Dh52 million as per the market value."
Of these, 237 cases, worth Dh44.6 million, turned out to be genuine, he explained.
"The remaining 35 cases, worth Dh7.4 million, proved to be fake, while about 18 million counterfeit items of 19 trademarks were recycled last year."
The IPR Department at Dubai Customs leads the way in seizing counterfeit goods and protecting brands from any IP violations, Mubarak underlined.
"It's the first-of-its kind department in the Middle East and plays a significant role in enforcing federal laws related to intellectual property rights and securing the emirate's borders from the hazards of counterfeit goods."
"So far, we have registered 3,910 trademarks and 692 trade agencies and keep feeding our database with the latest data," he stated. "In the first nine months of this year, we registered 501 trademarks and 109 trade agencies."
