If you're in the market for a new car, you're in luck. ArabWheels just awarded the best cars in the region during the ArabWheels Awards 2016 held last week in Dubai's Meydan Hotel. The award which started in 2015 honours vehicles based on the features they offer. There were a total of 33 awardees including the Car of the Year.
Best Small Sedan - Hyundai Elantra
The Elantra is technically a sedan but it packages itself as a sport vehicle. With a focus on aerodynamics and a powerful engine in either 1.6 or 2.0 mpi variants, the Elantra is the family car that can go fast.
Best Midsize Sedan - Volkswagen Passat
Scoring highly in the safety department, the Passat wins the midsize arena not only because it is safe, it's also quite convenient with a self-closing boot, daytime running lights and automatic post-collision braking as if six airbags isn't life saving enough.
Best Large Sedan - Nissan Maxima
All things considered, the Maxima is like a Rolls-Royce that is 1) Japanese and 2) discounted. But don't just dismiss it because of the latter. The Maxima is unparalleled in its class because of its price point.
Best Midsize SUV - Toyota Fortuner
Standing proudly amongst the Patrols and Land Cruisers of the country is the Toyota Fortuner. Looking for a quick off-road thrill but can't afford a Wrangler? Look no further.
Best Full Size Premium SUV - Range Rover SV Autobiography
Supercharged V8 engine, fine British engineering, the Range Rover SV Autobiography is for when you have your G-Class Mercedes in the garage but still want to catch some eyes.
Best Hatchback - Chevrolet Spark
The Chevrolet website proudly states that owning a Spark costs less per day than the fastfood place you frequent. At a cool, Dh34,000 that is completely true. The Spark is not only cheap, it also has an unrivalled smartphone suite and the craziest colour options out of any single car.
Best Compact Sports Convertible - Mazda MX-5
Spanning four generations, the MX-5 has been named by Top Gear as the world's best-selling roadster. It has continued to look good and drive well and the latest generation - the ND, doesn't disappoint.
Best Premium Performance Coupe - Jaguar F-Type SVR
For when you really want to go fast, you get into an F-Type. The SVR model which is touted as the 'ultimate Jaguar' by their SVO team, delivers 322 km/h of power using a twin supercharged engine and looks good while doing it.
Best Supercar Convertible - Lamborghini Aventador Roadster
The Dubai Police has the coupe version and that speaks volumes about how good this Italian number is. When you have a V12 engine and a body that is ready to fly, you get the thing of beauty that is the Aventador.
Car of the Year 2016 - Chevrolet Camaro SS
The 2016 facelift Camaro is just stunning. The American muscle car which pop culture associates closely to Bumblebee of Transformers fame combines modern, aggressive styling with a powerful V8 motor that rumbles with power awaiting to be let loose on the road.
