The traffic diversion came into effect on Wednesday and signboards have been installed to direct heavy truck drivers to the new road. RAK Police Traffic and Patrols Department Director Col Abdullah Ali said a technical traffic committee had visited the area to review the rising traffic congestion.

“The move is in response to a number of complaints came up on a live radio programme about the traffic jams in the area, known for vital institutions including hospitals and universities,” he said, adding that an emergency plan has been chalked out to ease students’ movement during examinations.

“As per a comprehensive study, we have decided to divert heavy trucks from Al Faliya Road to a new road.” Col Ali warned all drivers to comply with the set traffic rules and regulations. “Reckless motorists shall be stringently dealt with to ensure traffic flow.”

Cameras installed

Speeding is one of the main reasons behind traffic accidents and consequent casualties, said Col Abdullah Ali, adding that the department, in a bid to control speeding, has installed a number of advanced radars across the roads of the emirate.
