Globally, wildlife crime penalties span from a few days to life in prison, while fines can range from a few US dollars to three million
This has become all too frequent on the roads of late, as people are resorting to such actions in a bid to avert traffic fine payment.
An official source at the Abu Dhabi Attorney-General’s office clarified that this phenomenon is widespread, especially amongst travellers coming from other GCC countries, who deliberately obscure and sometimes smudge the number plates to avoid being identified when flashed.
The source pointed out that the Public Prosecution has referred as many as 172 people to court who have been accused of defacing the licence plates while driving in the UAE. The source affirmed that the Abu Dhabi Attorney-General counselor Yousef Saeed Al Abri has instructed that those involved in such wrongdoings ‘not to be released on bail’ as the offence has been detected repeatedly.
“Such an offence is deemed a flagrant violation of traffic rules since (the) law maintains that a number plate must be fixed well on a motor vehicle, and whoever obscure(s), smudge(s), modifies the number and data embedded on a licence plate, make, duplicate or use a number plate … flouting the traffic rules … shall risk an imprisonment term of not more than two years plus a fine of not more than Dh20,000, or with one of said penalties,” the source noted.
