Sharjah — The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) on Tuesday opened the Corniche Road after a six-day partial closure to carry out maintenance and development works.
According to a senior official, the authority had to intensify repair works to finish them on time and reopen the arterial road after a three-day postponement of work due to the demise of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia.
Eng Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Al Hajiri, Director of Sharjah RTA for Roads Affairs, said the Lagoon Corniche road from Majaz-3 to the Khalid Lake had been partially closed from January 25 to February 3, in completion of earlier road development phases. “The traffic flow was diverted to the opposite direction to be only one lane in the direction of Al Khalidiya Bridge and two lanes on the way to Al Qasba Channel Bridge.”
Part of the asphalt layer on three lanes of the road, 10.95m wide, were removed, renewed, painted and marked again during the third phase of the project, which also includes some amendments to the road, he added. Al Hajiri said the U-turns on the road have been widened to increase the capacity of these openings in line with the increasing development of the Lagoon area.
