Ras Al Khaimah – The RAK department of public works and services has blocked the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed road at Exit No 122.

The traffic flow for the drivers coming from Umm Al Quwain to Ras Al Khaimah has been diverted from that intersection and till the end of the road opposite the Etihad roundabout.

According to an official source, the road diversion is meant to complete the construction works.

“The asphalt layer of the road will be removed for a distance of 4.5km to ensure a high quality infrastructure for road users’ convenience and better performance,” said Eng Ahmed Mohammed Al Hammadi, Director General of the department.

The road has been blocked and the vehicles were diverted to the opposite direction after a barrier has been fixed to protect drivers on both directions, he added.

Early in October 2014, the RAK department of public works has diverted the traffic flow on the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed road to the Emirates and Etihad roads.

“The asphalt layers of the road for those travelling from the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah to the emirate of Sharjah at Exit No 103 opposite the emirate of Umm Al Quwain were removed at that time.”

All drivers have been urged to be cautious on the road and pay attention to the diversion to avoid traffic accidents, he said. “Overtaking front vehicles and parking at the roadside are not recommended unless in case of emergency.”

Meanwhile, the department started maintaining some internal roads in the emirate, and unblocking all the rain drainage openings. “The department has also started planting the 19km long RAK International Airport road,” he noted.

Al Hammadi said the maintenance of internal roads is in response to public complaints about ups, downs, and holes on the road. “The Department is also to build new roads for the schools it already built, such as the Shaml School.”

He indicated that the airport road is to be decorated with plants from the Etihad Bridge, passing by the Khiran roundabout, and until the airport roundabout at the Hamraniya area.

“The decoration works span the planting of the road median with decorative plants, fixing a modern irrigation network that will cut water usage by 40 per cent, let alone interlock works, and side parking spaces along the 19km arterial road.”
