The closure, between 10am and 12pm, is as a result of the opening of the 11th edition of the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (Idex 2013), scheduled to be held from February 17 to 21 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

Lt-Colonel Jamal Salem Al Amri, Chief of Public Relations Section in the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, said the police were ready and prepared to ensure a smooth traffic flow during Idex 2013. Three alternative roads had been designated on Abu Dhabi Island, namely Shaikh Zayed Road, Shaikh Rashed Road and Al Muroor Road.

Al Amri called on motorists to comply with traffic rules and guidelines, be cautious while driving and to keep roads safe and accident-free. Many traffic jams could occur, particularly in areas close to the Idex opening day parade routes, he said. He also appealed to drivers not to stop their vehicles at random and to keep traffic flowing, to avoid causing traffic obstruction.

Free bus services for Idex

The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi announced the launch of 80 free shuttle bus services for visitors and exhibitors to and from the Idex 2013 venue, Wam reported on Thursday.

This initiative comes within the role played by DoT to contribute to the success of major local and international events hosted in Abu Dhabi as a leading global destination for organising and managing big events.

The DoT will provide free shuttle bus services throughout all event days from 7am to 7pm for visitors and exhibitors of this international exhibition and conference from Abu Dhabi Island and its suburbs to Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec). The services will include the following routes: service 1 and 2, Tourist Club Area; service 3 and 4, Central Business District ‘Downtown’; service 5, Khalidiya area; service 6, Al Manhal; service 7, Yas Island and Saadiyat Island; and service 8, Al Maqta. The frequency of this service is available every 20 minutes.

DoT will also provide ‘Park and Ride’ service from 7am to 8pm at the Zayed Sports City Park with a capacity to park 3,000 vehicles.
