According to a statement issued by DoT, the value of the support it provided to more than 30 local and global events held in the emirate over the last four years amounted to Dh50 million, which was in the form of free public transport.

“This comes within the role played by DoT in contributing to the success of major events hosted in Abu Dhabi as a leading global destination for organising and managing big events such as Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and FIFA Club World Cup,” the department said.

The statement further added that providing free public transport to serve thousands of people to and from event destinations significantly contributed to reducing traffic congestion.

“We are contributing to Abu Dhabi’s positioning as a global pioneer in the events industry and one of the leading global destinations for internationally recognised events. We are continuously striving to upgrade and enhance the public transportation network in order to provide the public with a comfortable and safe transport, while protecting our environment,” said Saeed Mohammed Fadel Al Hameli, General Manager of the Bus Office at the DoT.

This, he added, would encourage frequent use of public transportation and give Abu Dhabi an added competitive advantage.

These major events that DoT served included the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC); World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC); Abu Dhabi Air Expo; International Association of Public Transport (UITP); V8 Super Cars Australia Race and Abu Dhabi International Triathlon.

In addition, the DoT offered ‘Park and Ride’ services between Zayed Sports City and Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque in order to minimise traffic congestion and limit the number of illegally parked vehicles in the area surrounding the mosque and on nearby roads.

In the light of this achievement and to recognise the efforts of the teams contributing to the success of special events public transport, the department also honoured 120 employees for their performance in supporting the global events.
