The celebration marks the first Traffic Police Patrol vehicle rolling out on Abu Dhabi streets in April 1962 after the establishment of the Abu Dhabi Police in 1957 when the emirate was just beginning to explore and tape its oil resources.
There were hardly a hundred and more vintage or classical vehicles, mainly Bedford and Land Rovers on the dust and blacktop roads in the Capital city along a few one to four storey buildings and hundreds of dwellings made with date-palm leaves called ‘hareesh’.
“Now it has been 50 years when the first traffic police patrol vehicle was launched to establish the department in 1962. It was a memorial platform for the department to function successfully and to promote the process of road safety since then. The department has made tremendous achievements in all its services,” said Major-General Mohammed bin Al Awadhi Al Minhali, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Police Operations.
The three-day celebrations began on Thursday night throughout the emirate with exhibition of vintage to modern Traffic Police Patrol vehicles at shopping malls. The main function held at Marina Mall was attended by school children dressed up both in traffic police uniforms and colourful traditional attires. Officers also distributed brochures on road safety.
An exhibition showing old and new Abu Dhabi and its law enforcement agencies, particularly the traffic police, is also being held at the Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Terminal 1 for the passengers to have a glimpse into the emirate’s past.
Major-General Al Minhali said a series of colourful programmes are being organised to celebrate the Golden Jubilee with road safety demonstrations and awareness campaigns.
The Abu Dhabi Police was established in 1957 with no vehicles but mounted officers protecting the two cities of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain and their suburbs. There were only horses and no motor vehicles those days. Today, the Abu Dhabi Police has a fleet of most advanced vehicles. The celebrations will conclude today with outstanding officers being honoured for their dedication and loyalty to protect the society.
