The warning comes as part of an awareness campaign launched on Wednesday to educate the public about the importance of being attentive on roads, especially while driving in foggy, stormy and rainy weather that may cause the driver to lose control over the wheel and lead to accidents.

The awareness campaign started in Khalid Lagoon area and will cover the entire emirate.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Ahmed bin Darwish, Deputy Director of Traffic and Patrol department at Sharjah Police, said the campaign is usually organised during this time of the year to raise awareness among the public about road safety to reduce accidents that are caused due to unstable weather. He added that the campaign features the distribution of pamphlets with instructions and guidelines about the importance of abiding by traffic rules. The campaign targets beach-goers, safari lovers, and motorists, especially those who drive on highways.

Lt-Col bin Darwish said that recently many violators, who were found not using their vehicle’s headlights on low beam during fogs were fined Dh200 along with four black points based on article 105 of federal traffic law. The article 130 of the law stipulates that in case the vehicle’s headlights are not working or are defective, the motorists will be fined Dh200 and six black points.  In case, the taillight is found malfunctioning, the motorist will be slapped with a Dh100 fine.

He warned motorists to drive with caution for their own safety and that of other road users.
