Titled “Be cautious of overtaking a traffic signal”, the campaign aims at inculcating into motorists minds the importance of respecting traffic rules, urging them never to skip a red signal as it can put their life, and other road users’ lives at risk.

During the campaign, awareness brochures in Arabic and English languages will be distributed among motorists with important instructions and guidelines relating to safe driving.

Head of the Traffic Awareness and Media Section of the Sharjah Traffic Police Major Abdel Rahman Khater said that overtaking a red signal is a very risky violation committed by errant motorists, which usually causes severe injuries and in some cases fatalities.

“Various traffic signals are having surveillance cameras (fitted) to track and record cars found violating traffic rules and jumping a red signal without consideration to his safety and the safety of other road users.

“Any motorists found overtaking at a red signal will be slapped with an Dh800 fine in addition to confiscating their vehicle for 15 days and adding eight black points to the motorists licence.”
