The Roads and Transport Authority’s Monitoring and Enforcement Department, alongside Dubai Civil Defence, has been conducting the campaign to improve safety in trucks carrying materials like petrol, gas, lubricant and oil waste, and biological and radioactive material, Abdulla Al Mahra, acting director of the department, said.

“The awareness event includes visiting around 18 companies specialised in transporting these dangerous goods and carrying out inspection campaigns for about 20 trucks to ensure their compliance with the conditions and criteria in place.”

Of the 22 trucks so far checked, five were found in breach of applicable rules and issued with appropriate fines, while 17 trucks were found compliant with the rules — “which is an indicator of the commitment of the concerned bodies to conform to the highest standards of security and safety”.

Inspection visits to “sites of relevance” were just some of the tasks the campaign would comprise, the RTA said in a Press release. “The department is also keen on staging a variety of awareness campaigns and training lectures for these parties in order to identify bottlenecks encountered during the implementation of plans, and figure out suitable solutions, besides verifying the compliance of these businesses, site facilities and service providers with the applicable systems,” Al Mahra said.

Such awareness and inspection campaigns helped slash the rate of traffic offences, he said. Brochures would be distributed to drivers of trucks transporting dangerous goods highlighting key offences in the transportation of these materials, such as unsound truck bodies, tyres or side mirrors, as well as ignoring time-related traffic bans on certain roads.
