A statistical report released by the Abu Dhabi Attorney General’s office revealed the major offences behind the serious accidents that took place in the emirate during that period.

The figures indicated that driving a motor vehicle rashly and in a manner which poses hazards to the public, jeopardising people’s lives by speeding on roads, and stunt driving accounted for 14 per cent of the overall traffic cases referred to court.

However, driving a car without a driver’s license accounted for 8 per cent of these cases, driving under the influence of alcohol and banned drugs constituted 7 per cent, while jumping the red light formed 3 per cent and obliterating the license plate, 1 per cent.

An official source at the Abu Dhabi Attorney General’s office called upon motorists to adhere to the traffic rules and speed limits set on roads. The source also advised them not to drive recklessly and speed on roads which could put public’s lives at risk.

Last week, the public prosecution referred six offenders detained over serious traffic violations. The traffic court condemned them to two months each in jail and suspended their driving licenses for six months. In another traffic court case, the court convicted a motorist of obscuring his vehicle’s number plate. He was sentenced to a month in jail, was fined Dh20,000 and his driving license was suspended for six months.

Law incriminates whoever deliberately commits an act, which put people’s lives, their health, security, freedom at risk. Offenders in such circumstances may risk imprisonment or fine or both penalties.
