The 11th-seeded Italian looked to be heading out at the third-round stage when trailing 4-1 to her seventh-ranked opponent, of Belarus, in the decider, having earlier fluffed a 5-1 lead to get the job done in a more straightforward manner.

However, in a clash that seemingly ebbed and flowed in either direction with alarmingly regularity at times, Pennetta reeled off the next five games in succession to challenge Vera Zvonareva’s conqueror, Alisa Kleybanova, for a semi-final place.

“Both of us didn’t play our best tennis and there were too many ups and downs,” the 28-year-old world number 18 admitted.

“It’s wasn’t easy to stay on the court when you’ve just lost the second set like I did, but I was trying to simply stay there and fight until the last point.

“In the end, I’m really happy because it wasn’t easy to stay on the court, fight and play after being 6-3, 5-1 up and having so many chances as well.

“I was waiting for her mistakes, took one step back and tried to run. Like that, my tennis isn’t good enough, so I tried to be aggressive, go to the net more and be on the court all of the time.

“When I was just running, staying back and playing really flat, I couldn’t do anything with this kind of player (Azarenka).

“In the third set, I began trying to do something different – like go to the net or hit the ball up and down a little bit – so it was much better.

“I think the same thing happened to her in the third set as it did to me in the second. She was waiting for my mistake and just stopped a little bit. She didn’t push the ball a lot and I just tried to be more aggressive.

“The thing is – until 6-3, 5-1 – I was playing really well, so it was my day. I just kept thinking about that. You have a chance and you lose it, but you can have another one, like she did in the second set. It was the same thing for me.”
