Now, Nadal eyes victory in Doha

Having started the New Year well by defeating tennis legend Roger Federer in the final of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, World No.1 Rafael Nadal said there was no extra pressure on him, rather it was extra motivation to win the season-opening Grand Slam—the Australian Open.

“It is not extra pressure. Now, for me, it is extra motivation. Like always, the pressure is there every day to play well and keep winning matches and I don’t think about winning the Australian Open immediately. I will think about winning in Doha next week and it will be important for me to put up a good performance there. After that, I will have one week to prepare for Australia. I will practice every day with positive attitude and try to arrive there in a good condition. You never know what is going to happen since its going to be a very difficult tournament. I want to try my best but it is surely going to be very, very difficult,” Nadal said.

Nadal said that he had made changes to his game and was looking to come inside the court more. “It is important to have a goal and what you need to improve on. I have to improve the position of the court and try to play little bit inside the court and I did it little bit in the last couple of months. I have to keep doing this. The backhand is good but sometimes it is not that good. So, I have to find the level of backhand. The forehand is good and perfect.

“The serve also is well. It is very crucial. I want to be able to serve like this every time. Good service helps in winning matches. Without that I would have lost the first set 6-3 because he (Federer) was playing well and return well. But I had my serve and that was the reason I was in the match all the while. The rest of the things come with confidence. I have to go more to the net if I play inside the court. You can always play longer and put the ball lot closer to the lines,” he said.

He said that it will always be difficult against a player like Federer. There were no breaks and both sets went the distance. “Sometimes we have no breaks. But always against Roger, it is going to be tough. He is a great player and his level has always been high. So it is always very difficult to play against such a player,” said Nadal.

Nadal said the goal was to remain healthy. Health is the most important thing. For me, and everybody, that’s the most important thing. Without that, the rest of the things are just impossible. And also a little bit more peace in the world. For my country, it is important to improve the economic situation since the last few months the economic situation has been a bit tough. Lot of people are having problems and I hope the situation improves everyday little bit,” he said.
