Second seed Roddick saved three match points but Monfils superbly threaded a forehand down the line on his fourth chance in the tiebreak, triggering chest-thumping celebrations.

“I tried to control the points,” fifth seed Monfils told reporters. “I tried to be aggressive, tried to push him, come to the net a bit more.”

Monfils will play Czech Radek Stepanek in the semi-finals of the $1.2 million Tokyo tournament after Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen pulled out with a fever before a ball was hit.

“When you’re in the semi-finals you always want to be in the final and then win the tournament — so let’s see tomorrow,” added Monfils.

The Frenchman took the first set tiebreak behind a dazzling array of lobs, drop shots and razor-sharp volleys, closing it out with a fierce backhand too hot for Roddick to handle at the net.

Roddick broke for 5-4 in the second set with an emphatic smash and the world number 10 drilled a huge forehand down the line in the next game to level the match.

Monfils athletically tracked down a Roddick lob before producing an astonishing down-the-line pass and followed with another thumping forehand winner off a Roddick smash.

The Frenchman failed to convert the subsequent break point but had Roddick on the ropes at 5-4 in the third set.

Roddick rallied from 0-40 with three big serves but watched in horror in the tiebreak as Monfils chased down a drop shot and brilliantly found the gap to win in just under three hours.

World number one Rafa Nadal was playing Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov in their quarter-final later on Friday.
