West Indies lost two late wickets in three balls to hand Pakistan the advantage on the second day of the second Test at the Shaikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
West Indies batsmen fought well after Shannon Gabriel snared five wickets to restrict Pakistan to 452 but a horror run-out towards the end of the day meant they now stand at 106 for the loss of four wickets from 45 overs. Importantly, they need 346 to make Pakistan bat again.
West Indies couldn't start with regular opener Kraigg Brathwaite as he had to make up for the time lost when off the field. So, Darren Bravo opened with Leon Johnson. They started well and took tea with 27 on board. Just after break, Rahat Ali broke their resistance as he got Johnson plumb in front of the wicket. Brathwaite walked to the crease.
Bravo tackled Zulfiqar Babar and Sohail Babar but his long vigil came to an end when Yasir Shah snared him in front of the wicket. The initial decision was not out and skipper Misbah-ul-Haq sought a review. Out it was and Shah got his 50th wicket in the UAE.
Shah welcomed Marlon Samuels with a flat delivery that hit his pad and was given out. Samuels went for a review but it was overturned.
With spin from both ends, interesting battles were on offer. Shah-Zulfiqar was a threatening pair. Once Samuels had his eye in, he scored three boundaries of one Shah over. Samuels was once dropped as he edged Shah but Sarfraz and Younis both missed.
West Indies had reached 106 for the loss of two wickets and all was well till the penultimate over bowled by Rahat. Samuels (30) edged it to slips for Sami Aslam to do the formality. And in the last over of the day, Brathwaite pushed Shah into the covers and ran but his partner Devendra Bishoo didn't. Misbah fired in the throw and the opener was back to the pavilion after a hard-fought 21 from 82 balls.
From a position of advantage, West Indies ended the day facing an uphill battle against Shah & Co.
Earlier in the day, many Pakistan batsmen had starts but didn't maximise. Pakistan started the day on 304 for 4 from 84 overs and looked to pile more misery but West Indies made good use of the new ball. Inside the first nine overs, West Indies packed off Misbah and Shah.
Misbah, overnight on 90, couldn't reach the three-figure mark. In the 89th over Gabriel got Misbah, who shuffled across the wicket but missed and was adjudged leg-before for 96.
This was his fourth failure in the nervous 90s. On four out of six occasions, he has failed to add to his overnight tally. Thus, he failed to score his sixth ton in Abu Dhabi.
Shah looked in control until he got out to Holder. It was a pull shot that he failed to control and ended up in Bishoo's hand for 23 runs from 31 balls.
Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Nawaz got together to restrict further damage with a 70-run partnership. Sarfraz comfortably negated the bouncers. He hit back-to-back boundaries of Miguel Cummins. He brought up his eighth fifty by timing Gabriel to long-on but three balls later the bowler swung in a zipper. Sarfraz was out for 59-ball 56.
Next up was Sohail and Gabriel shuffled him in a big way. There were two reviews made in one over from both batsman and bowler. One went in favour of Sohail and other against Gabriel. Both had some enticing battles and the Pakistani even took three fours form one over.
Nawaz fought well and his gritty stay ended when Holder yorked him with reverse swing. Nawaz made 25 from 71 balls.
Though with a clumsy technique, Sohail was effective. It was a brilliant catch by Leon Johnson in Holder's over that send Sohail back for run-a-ball 26.
And in the very next over Gabriel ended Pakistan innings by getting Zulfiqar caught behind to wicketkeeper Shai Hope for duck. This was Gabriel's maiden five-for. he had pocketed Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq on Friday.
Pacers Gabriel and Jason Holder skittled the lower order with four wickets in 10 overs that saw Pakistan add 40 runs and end the first innings at 452.
