Gulf Arab nations allied with the US on Saturday offered their condolences over the death of former US president George HW Bush. Bush's death at the age of 94 takes on greater importance in the region over his actions in the 1991 Gulf War that saw Iraq expelled from Kuwait. UAE leaders offered condolences to both President Donald Trump and former president George W. Bush over the elder Bush's death.
The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, sent a message of condolences to Trump. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, tweeted: "Our condolences to the Bush family and to the American people on the passing of George HW Bush, who we remember as a firm ally and friend."
His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, said in his tweet: "Our sincere condolences to the family of former US president George HW Bush on the death of the great statesman. He was a friend of the UAE and an ally to the region during a most difficult period." His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman offered similar condolences. Kuwait also paid tribute to the former US president, saying his support during the first Gulf War "will not be forgotten".
In a letter to Trump, the Amir, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, praised Bush's "historic and courageous stance... and his rejection of Iraq's occupation of Kuwait from the early hours".
