Dubai is connected more than ever because of its integrated public transport system. Only a decade ago, public transport in the city simply meant taxis and buses. Now, the emirate has a state-of-the-art transport network, the largest and best in the Middle East comprising taxis, buses, metro trains, trams, abras, water taxis, which cater to the needs of commuters from all walks of life. Last week, a driverless car was launched in the city and residents were wowed by its potential. The city's public transport system has undergone a sea change since the introduction of Dubai Metro in 2009. The driverless train system transformed not just the lives of residents but also the outlook of visitors who began viewing the emirate as a futuristic city where big ideas happen and are implemented with little fuss. The masses hop on to buses or the Metro, but for those who prefer an easy ride straight to their destinations, the city's cabs are a big draw. However, residents have raised certain irregularities in the fare system, which have been highlighted by Khaleej Times often.
According to commuters, they came to know of the changes through the drivers and that too after hailing the taxis. The Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai reacted swiftly by promising to take action against erring drivers who allegedly charged them for so-called booked taxis that had their meters running. Residents were urged to contact the Authority in case of any inconvenience or complaint. This proactive approach should be lauded but the RTA should also inform residents in advance of changes in fares or they will be in for a shock when they are dropped off at their destinations. Smart apps are smart transactions are great ideas. What matters more is communication.
