The Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court has slapped a fine of Dh200,000 on a young Arab man and sentenced him to one month in jail for accidentally killing another youth after ramming his vehicle into him.
The Public Prosecution had charged him with several offences, including breach of traffic rules and driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol, without paying proper attention to road users.
During the investigation, the accused man denied that he had escaped from the scene and was inebriated. He admitted to the rest of the charges, said a report in Emarat Al Youm newspaper.
He said that as he was driving the vehicle on the road towards the Red Island, he got close to a stationary vehicle, and heard a noise of having hit something. He stopped his vehicle 70 meters from the site, but could neither see the stationary vehicle nor its lights due to the dense fog. He added that he thought he might have hit an animal, and didn't notice any damage to his car until he reached his house.
A friend of the Arab man said that he had received a call from him, during which he told him about the incident. The accused asked his friend to call the police and get more information about the accident.
After investigation, the police found the youth had died at the spot. They conveyed to the accused, through his friend, that he should turn himself in for necessary action against him.
