Registration of electric vehicles in Dubai now requires validation from an accredited agent of such vehicles in the UAE, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Thursday.
"This requirement, put into effect from the beginning of October, stems from RTA's commitment to the safety of roads and users," the RTA said in a statement.
"Electric vehicles have highly sensitive electrical and chemical components that pose a risk to users, roads, and pedestrians without proper quality checks. The availability of an accredited agent within the UAE will minimise these potential risks," explained Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, CEO of RTA's Licensing Agency.
Al Ali added that the RTA has alerted all service suppliers, auto agents, and technical testing personnel not to register an electric vehicle in Dubai's traffic system unless it is verified by a UAE-based accredited agent.
To raise public awareness and explain the responsibilities of each party, the RTA is holding training courses for examiners in collaboration with accredited auto agents in the UAE to familiarise personnel with the testing standards of electric and hybrid vehicles, he said.
