A staggering 66 road accidents took place in Dubai from 6am to 9am on Monday due to the prevailing weather conditions. Luckily, the mishaps were not serious and no injuries were reported.
The Dubai Police received 1,812 phone calls during the same period on Monday morning, Brigadier General Dr Khalid Al Marri, acting director of operations room, said.
Al Marri said drivers should avoid applying sudden brake and keep their car speed under control while driving through the tunnels during rains.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, called on motorists to take caution on the roads due to the rains and erratic weather.
He urged drivers to leave enough distance between vehicles and follow traffic rules to avoid accidents. The director also made an appeal to the motorists to cooperate with the police to maintain a smooth flow of traffic.
He explained that most accidents are caused by speeding and therefore, the drivers should reduce speed and drive slowly during the bad weather. They must not change lanes suddenly and avoid distractions while at the wheel.
Brigadier Al Mazrouei pointed out that the number of traffic accidents that occur in such weather conditions are very high as the visibility is poor, and things get worse when the motorist is driving recklessly.
He stressed that the Dubai traffic department will take precautionary steps to reduce accidents and intensify patrols as well as carry out rapid intervention in emergency cases.
He said that the police were performing a pivotal role in educating drivers and road users, while spreading awareness through various media channels.
