A tourist from the UK lost a diamond in Dubai and, as soon as she reported it, cops swung into action. It turned out another woman found and took the gem - but the Dubai Police managed to trace its location and return it to its owner in 48 hours.
Col Dr Mubarak Saeed Salem Bin Nawwas Al Ketbi, director of the Tourist Police Department, said the tourist had been to a number of places in the city and wasn't able to pinpoint where she lost it.
The team combed through all the places she visited but failed to find it. Then they tried expanding the search to the transport the woman used.
Al Ketbi said the tourist rode a cab, but the driver couldn't find the diamond either.
The police then learnt that another passenger got in the taxi, found the diamond and took it without telling the cabbie. She had no idea how much it was worth, Al Ketbi said.
The Dubai Police was able to get the diamond back - much to the relief of the British tourist. The woman was "extremely happy" as she thanked the cops, the officer added.
