UAE students beat global average in IB results

Dubai - Three students from Gems achieved the maximum score of 45 - putting them in top-performing 1% across the world.

UAE students' International Baccalaureate (IB) results have surpassed the global average after they registered a pass rate of 93.77 per cent this year. Schools following the curriculum said this is one of the "best ever" results.
Despite the cancellation of exams due to Covid-19, students in the country passed with flying colours as they surpassed the global average of 32.8.
A total of 174,355 students around the world received their IB results on Monday. This includes 2,203 students in the UAE. The IB diploma is a school qualification accepted by leading universities worldwide and 50 schools in the UAE now offer the programme.
Due to Covid-19 situation, This year, pupils were assessed based on their coursework and internal assessments. "I would like to share my heartfelt congratulations with all 2020 Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme graduates for their efforts over the last two years," said Dr Siva Kumari, IB director-general.
Many achieve 'perfect 45'
At the seven Gems schools that offer the programme, students achieved "record results" - in both the pass rate and average points. Three students from Gems achieved the maximum score of 45- putting them in top-performing one per cent across the world. These include two students from Gems Wellington International School and one student from Gems Modern Academy. Over 520 students from Gems Education schools achieved an average pass rate of 94.5 per cent and an average point score of 34.
"We are proud of this year's cohort of Gems IB Diploma students. Not only have they had to complete their secondary education in the most trying of circumstances, but they have also managed to collectively achieve our best ever IB Diploma results," said David Fitzgerald, senior vice president - education at Gems Education.

One of the toppers from Gems Wellington International School, Teresa Werner, said: "I never thought I'll get the perfect score. I tried to stay on top of my workl and kept up with all my notes. I am truly overwhelmed."

Taaleem group said it has achieved record results in both pass rates and average points with a 45 point 'topper' from Uptown International School. "We are proud of our IB results as we have achieved a 95 per cent pass rate across our schools. This is significantly better than the world average of around 78 per cent. It has been a record-breaking results year across our Taaleem IB schools," said Alan Williamson, CEO of Taaleem.

"It's difficult to quantify the amount of hard work. Preparations began in 2018, My school has helped me become an all-rounder and an open-minded person," said Abeer Ladhani, Year 13 student of Uptown International School.
