Seven mobile vendors were caught selling four tons of fake products and expired food items following a crackdown by Sharjah Municipality in coordination with the Sharjah Police in Al Sajjah.
Khalid Bin Falah Al Suwaidi, assistant general manager, customer service, Sharjah Municipality, said that the inspection campaign against street vendors in Al Sajjah area was carried out as part of the efforts to implement directives to preserve the cultural and aesthetic appearance of Sharjah City.
He said mobile food vending is strictly prohibited and practicing it is a violation of the health regulations set by the civic body.
Al Suwaidi added that the inspections are on to catch mobile vendors who flout the municipality's regulations and punish them severely, including deporting them.
He said the municipality had received complaints about activities of the vendors who were thriving in industrial areas. "They practice their trade at street corners selling potentially hazardous stuff while targeting workers in labour camps in industrial area," Al Suwaidi said.
Khalifa Bu Ganem, head of the municipal inspection department, said that the campaign resulted in the arrest of seven street vendors and the confiscation of four tons of goods, such as clothing and milk, and other unlicensed or controlled substances. Consumer goods and foodstuffs such as vegetables, fruit, fish, were also seized and handed over to the Sharjah Charity Association.
