Be aware of unverified, fake social media accounts, including those bearing the names of famous personalities.
Nearly 95 per cent of such accounts are being used to scam residents from their hard-earned money.
This was stated in a press release issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to all UAE residents, as per Al Bayan report.
Do not fall prey to their tactics, the TRA warned, adding that these accounts are generally without posts and are not active and have low numbers of followers.
Several incidents took place where such fake social media personality account holders would appeal to residents via humanitarian cases.
The TRA urged all residents to alert the authorities if they happen across or are contacted by any such accounts so they can be promptly shut down.
In one case, a man pretending to be a famous person on social media was able to convince an elderly woman to send money to him in Dubai.
The Emirati national had believed he was in need because she recognised the name of the personality on Instagram. She told her daughter to send him money as he promised he would return the cash and reward her for her kindness.
This fresh warning comes after some 5,000 fake social media accounts were blocked in the UAE through a smart system after Dubai Police launched their new awareness campaign against online fraud.
Dubai Police partnered with telecommunications firm Etisalat to closely monitor suspicious social media activity and block bogus accounts.
