Four men, who were convicted of robbing Dh400,000 from a money exchange office in Abu Dhabi, have had their 10-year jail sentences reduced to five on appeal. Court documents stated that the Nigerian men robbed a forex exchange office located in the outskirts of the Abu Dhabi city.
Prosecutors said the men aged between 30 and 35 years carried out the robbery in 2017 using swords and iron tools.
"The men had barged into the money exchange during working hours, when the employees were in the process of transferring funds in special vehicles meant for the purpose," said prosecutors.
Police investigations revealed that the gang had been closely monitoring the money transferring activity at the exchange for a few days before the robbery. They had allegedly forced the employees to hand over the money from the vans to them and fled in a car they rented from another emirate with forged documents.
The Abu Dhabi Police arrested the men from Sharjah and recovered the stolen cash.
During the police questioning, the defendants admitted to carrying out the robbery. They said they threw some phones and calling cards at the crime scene to mislead the investigation.
Both the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance and the appellate court had earlier sentenced the accused to 10 years in jail. The men, however, challenged the ruling at the Cassation Court, denying the changes.
They earlier told the court that they were wrongly convicted and that their confession at the public prosecution came as they did not understand the language used by the officers.
