The Sharjah Criminal Court has charged two brothers with stealing money and passports of a number of workers of a company which they worked for.
The company's owner lodged the complaint against the duo.
He claimed that the documents and cash were stolen from a safe of the contracting company in which the two Arab brothers had been working for years.
During the court hearing, the first accused pleaded not guilty.
The defendant said the complainant used to bring workers on visit visas and then did not modify the status to residency to save money.
After the expiration of the visit date, the owner used to send the workers back home and hired fresh workers, he added.
The accused said the complaint of theft from the safe had been concocted by the owner to blackmail the duo.
The owner himself hid the passports in the safe so he could abuse workers until they finished work in one of company's construction sites, the accused said.
The second brother said the company had 16 surveillance cameras installed on the premises.
When the police asked the owner to show them the footage, he claimed that all records get automatically deleted within a week, the accused claimed.
The cops, therefore, couldn't check the CCTV cameras installed in the room where the safe was kept, he pointed out.
The court has adjourned the case and will announce its verdict at a later date.
