No plans to change speed limits on SMBZ, Emirates roads in Sharjah
Sharjah - Last week, Dubai announced that speed limits on these two roads will be reduced from 120 km/hr to 110 km/hr starting October 15.
Lt Soud Al Shaibah, Director of Traffic Awareness at Sharjah Traffic Department, said there will be no reduction in speed limits on these two roads as there was no need to do so. He also clarified that any decision in this matter will be taken by the federal authority.
The current speed limit on both these roads is 120 km/hr, with the radar set to flash if vehicles touch speeds of 141 km/hr or above.
He said these speed limits were considered appropriate by the department.
"The decision to reduce the speed on any street in the emirate would not be taken without studying the figures and statistics of accidents recorded on the street," he stressed.
He said the department is currently studying the traffic situation on streets in the emirate in general, and recommendations to change speed limits wherever deemed necessary will be escalated to the federal authority.
Last week, the Dubai Police and Roads and Transport Authority announced that speed limits on these two roads will be reduced from 120 km/hr to 110 km/hr starting October 15, 2017.
Meanwhile, a few motorists Khaleej Times spoke to said speed limits should be uniform on federal roads that link emirates.
Abdul Aziz Al Amri, a motorist, said that he travels daily between Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates, and finds it difficult to follow the changing speed limits across the emirates -- high speed in Abu Dhabi, reduce speed in Dubai, then increase speed in Sharjah.
Khamees Al Shehhy from Ras Al Khaimah said he works in Abu Dhabi and travels between the two emirates several times a week. He said that when he reaches Dubai he forgets to reduce the speed, and continues with the same speed until he enters Sharjah, and proceeds to Ras Al Khaimah.
Mohamed Al Yamani, another motorist, said that it would be easy for motorists if speed is uniform on federal streets.
