An Asian man suffered injuries after getting thrown out of a building during a powerful gas cylinder explosion in a building in Sharjah Industrial Area 10 on Friday, said a police official.
The strong impact of the explosion, caused by a suspected gas leak, threw the man out of his apartment located on the first floor of the building and caused damage to the building and cars parked below.
Col Adil Al Mazmi, fire expert at the Sharjah Police Forensic Department, said that the glass windows of the building were damaged in the blast.
"The police and civil defence teams reached the site in less than five minutes and rushed the injured man to Kuwaiti Hospital. The rescue units of both the departments managed to evacuate 77 families from the affected building immediately to ensure their safety."
According to Col Al Mazmi, the gas cylinder, which was kept in poorly ventilated kitchen exploded unexpectedly and caused the walls of the apartment to collapse. Five cars parked underneath the building were damaged.
"The tenants will be provided with temporary accommodation until completion of maintenance work," Col Al Mazmi added.
