A staggering 818 drivers were fined by the Ras Al Khaimah Police for talking on their hand-held mobile phones while at the wheel in the first six months of the year. Most of them were found hampering traffic flow at the signals.
Such a traffic violation draws a fine of Dh800, along with four black traffic points, said Brigadier Dr Mohammed Saeed Al Humaidi, director general of the central operations room, RAK Police. "Fines shall also be slapped on those who eat or smoke while driving in a way that obstructs traffic movement."
Traffic offences are closely monitored by advanced cameras fixed in every nook and corner, he added.
"Irrespective of whether the traffic light is green or not, the motorist is at fault if he is ignoring road safety, and failing to observe traffic regulations."

Rampant practice

The 818 phone-related violations were registered all across Ras Al Khaimah, Al Humaidi pointed out.
"Drivers should rather use hands-free headsets or other alternative smart gadgets to steer clear of traffic violations and potential accidents."
Failing to fasten seat belt is also one of the main traffic violations detected by the advanced cameras installed everywhere, he pointed out.
The traffic and patrol department of the RAK Police have booked as many as 1,622 drivers and 169 passengers for failing to buckle up in the last six months of this year.
Officers are also entitled to take a picture of the erring driver and share it on the RAK Police smart app, Al Humaidi underlined.
