A 34-year-old Emirati succumbed to injuries he received in an accident on one of the roads in Ras Al Khaimah.
The victim was run over by a 19-year-old Emirati at the Al Rams area, according to Col Ibrahim Mohammed Mattar, chief of the Al Rams police station.
The central operations room of the RAK Police, having been alerted of the accident, dispatched a traffic patrol, an ambulance, paramedics and rescue teams to the site in record time.
"We have been informed about the terrible accident early on Friday around 2.30am."
The paramedics and rescue teams tried to resuscitate the victim, but he could not make it and died on the spot, he added.
"The corpse of the victim was shifted to the morgue of the hospital for burial by relatives, while the accident file was referred to the bodies concerned for legal action"
Col Mattar urged all motorists to be take cautious while driving late at night.
"All motorists have to be attentive on the road to avoid casualties and damages."
He also said that speeding and distracted driving have been blamed on a number of run-over incidents.
The Ras Al Khaimah civil court of appeal has recently ordered a Gulf driver to pay Dh450,000 in compensation to an Arab woman who suffered an 80 per cent disability after he ran over her.
Col Mattar said pedestrians should be given priority at the designated areas to ensure their safety. "Turning a blind eye to such a simple rule is to blame for many of the accidents reported recently."

A Dh500 fine along with six black points shall be slapped against any driver who does not give priority to pedestrians as per Article 43 of the traffic law.

"Also a fine of Dh400 shall be imposed against any jaywalker who crosses the road from the undesignated areas according to Article 147 of the traffic law," he added.

"Pedestrians are advised to use the zebra crossing or take pedestrian bridges. Otherwise, they will face fines," he said.
