As many as 121 abandoned vehicles have been impounded by the Ras Al Khaimah Police in two weeks since it launched its campaign against unattended cars.
In the latest crackdown, 56 deserted vehicles were seized from Al-Maamura area, according to Brigadier Mohammed Saeed Al Humaid, director-general of the central operations room, RAK Police.
"The Maamura police station authorities have confiscated 56 abandoned vehicles in a week," he said. "Warning letters were stuck on five other cars in the area falling under the jurisdiction of the Maamura police station."
The police had spotted 96 abandoned vehicles across the emirate two weeks ago, he added.
"Up to 65 of these vehicles were moved to the impoundment yard. The 56 abandoned cars seized this week have been added to these." This raises the total number to impounded vehicles in two weeks to 121.
Brig Humaidi said they have assigned 10 traffic patrols in the morning shift just to spot any abandoned vehicle in the emirate. "One of the areas monitored by the patrols is thoroughly inspected every day."
The vehicle owners - who are issued warning letters - have been given a grace period of 10 days to remove, shift or clean them, he pointed out.
"Failing to do so, the vehicle shall be impounded, and will only be released after the payment of due fine."
Maisun Mohammed, acting director of public resources department, RAK Police, said 500 parking or impoundment spaces have also been earmarked for the abandoned vehicles that are seized.
"All the impounded vehicles are shifted to the impoundment yard at Al Saedi area on 30 recovery vehicles operated by the Lulu transport company."
"A thorough database of chassis' numbers of all seized vehicles is prepared so that they can be easily sorted out, tracked, and collected back as per due legal procedures."
All the vehicles left without number plates are immediately confiscated and shifted to the Al Saedi yard.
"These vehicles, if not claimed within a grace period of six months, will be sold as scrap."
