Dubai — The Emirati passport has been ranked first among the Arab countries and 47th worldwide in the list of the most powerful passports in terms of how many countries can be visited without a visa, or by getting one upon arrival. The UAE passport grants its holder access to 72 countries.

Peru and Dominica shared the UAE’s 47th rank.

Saudi Arabia’s passport was ranked 57th on the list, with its holder having access to 61 countries. The Omani passport was ranked 63rd worldwide. It gives its holder access to  54 countries.

A passport from a country in good global standing is a powerful thing, allowing its holder to move across borders without dealing with the nightmarish bureaucracy of a visa application.

Arton Capital, a financial firm that says it “empowers individuals and families to become global citizens”, put together the ranking. The ranking sorts countries by the number of other countries a passport holder can visit without a visa or by attaining a visa upon arrival.

The highest-ranked passports are those of the US and the UK.

Languishing at the bottom of the list are Myanmar, the Palestinian territories and South Sudan.
