"Spinsterhood and divorce are now the main factors behind many problems that threaten families and weaken the social structure," said the a study conducted by Saria Abdul Rahman and Fatima Khalfan Saeed, students at the Ajman University for Science and Technology (AUST).

"Spinsterhood is dangerous and did not exist in the times of our grandfathers and ancestors who lived in a very stable family environment with no worries like today," said the study.

The study said that the high costs of marriage and ignorance of religious values were the main reasons for its spread and stressed that age and academic qualifications should not be the main criteria to judge people and that religious values should be given precedence.

The study said it was essential that the younger generation and their parents change their way of thinking and adopt resonable concept in evaluating personal qualities of men willing to marry and form a family. "It will be very dangerous to calculate the materialistic qualities and match them with morals and good behaviour." it pointed out. The study said that women were meant to be housewives - not spinsters - and it was better to have a decent man rather than be choosy and remain single. "This social status will badly affect women and will apparently mirror on their behaviour and way of leading life all together," said the study.
