Sharjah: The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) will introduce a slab tariff system effective January, 2015.

A top official at Sewa said the new slab system is intended to promote efficient consumption of electricity and water at a time when conservation and preservation of the precious resources are most needed. The tariff will be the same rate as of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) in the northern emirates. The slab system will not apply to Emirati residential households.

He added that Sewa is currently reviewing the rate of power and water based on studies that take into consideration the average income of the individual. “The price of power in Sharjah compare to local and international rates and is very competitive” he commented.

The official added that Sewa is making great efforts to ensure stability for residents of the emirate through its support of the energy and water sectors. The new system will not have any negative effect on commercial, industrial and residential sectors. Also, there will not be any additional charges for introducing this new system.

He said Sewa is ready to train people of all sectors to rationally use power and water through strategic awareness that would help the spread of an energy preservation culture which will help decrease consumption by 30 per cent.
