On May 16, the CID unit at Gold Souk arrested the accused on charges of stealing gold chains worth Dh16,450 from Popley Jewellers following a complaint by a salesman who discovered some 200 gm of jewellery was missing.
On conducting investigations, the police arrived at the conclusion that the woman had also stolen two gold bangles from a Damas outlet on May 13.
The woman had employed more or less the same modus operandi in both cases.
Anwar had kept the salesman at the Damas outlet preoccupied with repeated questions and requests for any number of items to be displayed. At an appropriate moment, she had concealed the bangles in her attire.
The Damas salesman discovered theft only later when he reviewed security camera footage which caught the woman in the act. He reported the issue to the Dubai police who circulated the woman's picture to all gold outlets in Dubai.
The salesman at Popley Jewellers, however, had promptly discovered the theft and immediately summoned the police. During interrogation, the woman confessed to the crime and, after taking the required permission from the public prosecution, the police raided the woman's home.
