UAE captain Tim Fletcher dotted down the first try of this friendly match inside the first 10 minutes and fly-half Andy Russell successfully kicked the subsequent conversion for the hosts to lead 7-0 initially.

Russell himself then crossed over and added the extras as well after 25 minutes to double their early advantage, but the Barbarians hit back almost immediately with two converted scores to level things up at the half-time interval.

The floodgates began to creak open for the Barbarians upon the resumption of play in the second half and the UAE made the most of the presentable opportunities on offer, running in 40 points without reply.

With fifteen minutes left to play, the UAE’s Alistair Thompson suffered a sickening knock to the head, which saw him replaced by John Fawls. The Gulf Barbarians then finished off with a flourish as Ed Lewsey registered his second try of the afternoon and Chris Burch nailed his third conversion. Mark Burnell was their other tryscorer in this 33-point defeat.

At the other end, Fletcher and Russell contributed 10 and 16 points apiece, while Murray Strang shared the kicking duties with the latter and slotted over four conversions for eight points of his own.

Charles Lilley, Steve Smith, Imad Reyal and Graham Murphy also breached the Gulf Barbarians’ defensive line.
