UAE’s under-19 team vice captain and left arm pacer Samia is adjudged the Best Lady Cricketer of the UAE.
“It is a great honour and feels nice to be part of a wonderful ceremony being attended by the great personalities in cricket. I started playing at the age of 12 for the Young Talents Cricket Academy in 2005 and was first selected for the UAE team two years later. Then I played for UAE in the Thailand tour where I got six wickets.” Samiya told Khaleej Times.
“During the Singapore tour, our Under-19 team reached the semi-final and I was the top bowler of the ACC tournament with 10 wickets. This year I am the vice-captain of the U-19 team for Kuwait tour.” Khurshid, who scored 477 runs and picked up 17 wickets for William Hare Abu Dhabi Gymkhana, was named the best all-rounder and he received a cash prize of Dh4000.
William Hare Abu Dhabi Gymkhana’s Mohammad Rehan bagged the best bowler’s award and a cash prize of Dh3000, while Yogi Group’s Shaiman Anwar Butt won the best batman award and Dh3000.
Shaiman scored a total of 1343 runs in the ‘A’ division tournaments – the Bukhatir league of Sharjah Cricket Council and the Al Hamad Cup under the auspices of Abu Dhabi Cricket Council.
“It was a dream come true for me. This is first time I am getting this prestigious award. I am quite happy to receive it from a cricketer like Ranatunga. I thank Bhatia for supporting regional cricket and its players,” Shaiman told Khaleej Times.
“Now our team is playing the semi-final of the 50-over Blenheim Cricket tournament and this award will be an inspiration for me to perform better in the upcoming matches,” he added.
Sharjah Cricket Stadium Vice-chairman Waleed Bukhatir, Emirates Cricket Board chief executive Dilawar Mani, Dubai Cricket Council honorary secretary Mohammed Lokhandwala were also present during the function. “The awards are recognition for the local players as they receive the prizes from great cricketers and the support will help them do well in future matches,” Bhatia said.
DCC also honoured UAE’s senior umpire Tariq Butt with a life time achievement award for his 32 years of umpiring in the region.
Meanwhile Mohamed Mashood CTK of Nucaf Tellicherry who picked up 20 wickets and scored 127 runs, won the best bowler award in the Division II while Amjad Javed of Fly Emirates who scored 312 runs and picked up nine wickets, bagged the best batsman prize.
Nucaf Tellicherry’s Prajakat Chauhan, who smashed 324 runs and bagged 11 wickets, was selected as the best all-rounder.
It was a memorable evening for junior cricketers as Muaz Qazi, Varun Totadri and Shorye Chopra won the prizes for their performances in inter-school tournaments.
