Smartphone cameras are good, but it may take a while before they match the quality produced by traditional digital cameras - which is why the latter is still very much popular despite all the technologies being crammed inside handhelds.
"Sensors [in digital cameras] won't fit into smartphones at this point in time, but maybe in the future," Taro Kimura, managing director of Sony Middle East and Africa, told Khaleej Times.
"Add to that, these sensors are so expensive to produce, so it may take a little while [before they make their way into smartphones," he added.
Kimura was speaking during the launch of Sony's newest camera, the Alpha-9 interchangeable lens camera, at the recent Photography Live event in Dubai.
He dubbed the A9 as a game-changer, specifically for those in the sports and wildlife beats, because of its enhanced 35mm full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with a 24.2MP resolution, the first in the world capable of data speed processing up to 20 times faster than previous models.
"It is a fresh look at what a camera is and what a camera should be," Kimura said, adding that the A9 is "simply unmatched by any camera, either mirrorless or DSLR".
Professional photographers from around the world - the first to have a go at the new A9 - gave testimonials for the product. Professional Filipino photographer Sam Coran was also at the event, giving a live demo of the product's features.
The A9 will be available in the Middle East from June 8 for Dh17,499.
Sony also unveiled its new Super Telephoto Zoom lens at the event, the latest in its G Master series, coming in a lightweight design and a variety of professional functions and customisations. It will be priced at Dh10,999.
