Dubai —- Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has awarded a Dh1.47 billion contract to German industrial group Siemens for the expansion of the M-Station power plant in Dubai.
The expansion will increase its electricity-generating capacity to 2,700 megawatts, from 2,060 MWs, at the gas-powered facility, Dewa said in a statement on Thursday.
The Dubai utility’s total installed capacity is 9,656 MWs of electricity and 470 million imperial gallons of desalinated water per day. After the expansion of M-Station plant, its installed capacity will reach 10,356 MW of electricity.
The expansion project, which will be completed and delivered by April 30, 2018, supports Dewa’s strategies and plans to meet the overall development needs of electricity and water.
“The M-Station, built at a cost of Dh10 billion, is the newest and largest power production and desalination plant in the UAE, with a total capacity of 2,060 MW of electricity and 140 million imperial gallons of water per day,” Dewa managing director and chief executive officer Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said.
Al Tayer said: “The station adopts the highest levels of availability, reliability, and efficiency, using the most advanced technologies in the world. Dewa enhances the efficiency and capacity of the production, transmission, and distribution of electricity and water networks to meet the needs of consumers, developers and other business sectors to meet the growing demand for power in Dubai. The M-Station is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technological systems.”
The expansion project includes new power generation units with a capacity of 700 MW to be added to the current capacity of the station to eventually produce 2,700 MW by 2018. The expansion project includes adding two gas turbine generators, two heat recovery steam turbine generators, and one back pressure steam turbine.
“This will increase the plant’s thermal efficiency from 82.4 per cent to 85.8 per cent, which is considered among the highest thermal efficiency rates in the world,” he said.
“The Jebel Ali power station complex, which includes the M-Station is one of the main pillars that enable Dewa to provide Dubai with a very reliable, efficient and high quality electricity and water supply. Dewa works tirelessly to enhance its installed capacity,” he added.
