Asteroid 2Ol2 raced past the earth at a phenomenal distance of 27,5OO kilometres, a scientific marvel, yet devastatingly lethal, sparking a discussion on asteroid deflection.

Amazingly, Russian scientists didn’t see the meteor coming toward the Ural mountains, leaving scores of meteorologists baffled as to the normally accurate forecasting of such phenomena — with the last such occurrence, also in Russia, having taken place over a hundred years ago, flattening vast forest land.
