Why should our kids carry the weight of the world on their shoulders?

As a medical professional and a concerned parent of young school going children, I agree and support the guidelines issued by Delhi government's Directorate of Education (DoE) published in Khaleej Times (Delhi govt: They're kids, not mules; October 16).
Our kids carry huge schoolbags, and it is scientifically proven that it causes anxiety, and could lead to back and knee problems.
The guidelines introduced by the Delhi government recommend by weight limits of bags as per the age and class of children. It also advises no homework for grade 1 and 2 students, and suggests schools to provide advance timetables regarding books and notebooks so that bags can be packed more efficiently.
I hope and wish that relevant authorities in the UAE also issue strong guidelines on similar lines for the welfare of the children.
