This is in response to the Opinion article ‘Drop the tension, ditch the fear’ (KT, February 20). Exams play a pivotal role in students’ lives. In today’s fiercely competitive world exams determine students’ path of life. It is true that education is an economic destiny for most students. Hence success in examinations determines their future. Exam time is that time of a year when students burn midnight oil, are filled with stress, tension and their anxiety level is alarmingly high. But when in spite of putting their best foot forward and toiling diligently, if success eludes them, their hopes are dashed and dreams shattered. They become dejected, depressed and frustrated, some even going to the extent of harming themselves.

Children are our most valuable assets. We as parents should make them realise that our love for them would not ebb if they perform badly. Overly expectations, pushing them to the limit and constant comparisons with others should be avoided. Parents’ unstinted support, inspiring words and standing by them in all circumstances definitely have a positive impact on them. Assure them that imperfect performance is but natural. Reassure them that there are more important things in life than accomplishing academic excellence. Each child is born with unique potential. Tapping and exploring their talent is important.
