Much is being discussed about safe driving and I believe the authorities and public at large want to be a part of the picture. The most necessary steps in this direction would be:
- Reduce the ‘free limit’ of 20 km/ph over the legal limit of 100/120. There are certain drivers who believe the speed limit is limit + 20. Why cannot the authorities limit the free limit to 5 km/ph?
- Introduce a mechanism to check the speed of heavy vehicles that believe the speed limit of cars is also applicable to them. Are there any fixed special radars that are calibrated to check the speeding vehicles on Shaikh Zayed Road?
- Introduce a mechanism to ensure that the heavy vehicles use only the allocated lanes.
In EU there are truck cards that can be downloaded by police to see the driving speed, rest time etc to monitor that the truckers have abided by the rules.
