The world is already in the grip of Covid-19. Your article talks about another ticking time bomb (Divorce-proof your marriage; WKND, April 3).
"Now, observers are also warning that the increased amount of time that couples are having to spend together is likely to cause divorce rate to spike - hard." That is too painful. It is indeed hard to comprehend. It raises a question: If increased time together leads to increased divorce, why have time together at all? Why do people marry?
I believe family is the best gift humanity received from the creator, and marriage is the entry permit. It is hard to believe the specialised 'divorce lawyers' reckon that the more time together will lead to more divorce! If there is any truth in it, then this is the biggest tragedy in the waiting.
According to one of the divorce lawyers the article referred to: "Marriage is something you need to constantly work on." I think there is something wrong with the concept here. On a job you do, you need to constantly work on sharpening the skills. Marriage is something one must live to the fullest, you don't work on it, you just live it, together. I believe there is only one thing you need to do to keep a marriage, a family strong - sharing. Share what? Share everything. Post marriage, there shouldn't be 'I' in your life; it should be 'we'.
We often read 'each one of us must have our own space, our own private time in our life.' When you seek for 'your own' in a married life, you are beginning to seek 'your own' interests which will eventually lead to distancing the spouses that leads to divorce.
Marriage is the most precious gift; preserve it at all costs. Be on a competition between the two to love more than the other. You will enjoy a wonderful life till your last breath.-James Pullatt, Dubai
