As India gets closer to the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission has warned voters about a WhatsApp message that is going viral on various chat groups.
The message claims that NRIs can vote online for the upcoming elections. All they need to do is register online on eci.gov.in and enroll as an overseas voter.
To bust the rumour, ECI spokesperson Sheyphali Sharan took to Twitter clarifying that it is a fake message.
"It has come to our notice that the following FAKE NEWS is circulating on some WhatsApp groups. It is clarified that you can only apply for voter registration online through http://nvsp.in  portal," she tweeted.

The series of tweets further read, "Overseas voter may come to his/her designation polling station with passport as document for identification."
"There is no online voting facility for any category of voter. Overseas Indians may submit application for enrolment in form 6A online at http://nvsp.in  or by using Voter helpline mobile app."
